Dilijan is a forested resort and spa town located in the northeast of Armenia, about a 1.5-hour drive from Yerevan, in the Tavush region. Nestled among thick woodlands, Dilijan is often referred to as the “Armenian Switzerland” for its lush forests, fresh mountain air, and cool climate.

The town is known for its blend of traditional Armenian architecture and nature — with cozy guesthouses, hotels, art centers, and especially its preserved historic quarter, called Old Dilijan.

In medieval times, Dilijan was known as Hovk (meaning “cool” or “breezy place”), and it served as a favorite retreat for Armenian royalty, who came to hunt in the surrounding forests. The forests of Dilijan cover more than 34,000 hectares.

To enrich biodiversity and protect the woodland ecosystem, a nature reserve was established in 1958, which was later renamed Dilijan National Park in 2002. Today, forests cover around 94% of the park’s territory. There are 40 species of trees and 18 species of bushes, mostly oaks, beeches, maples, and willows.

The national park is also home to a rich variety of wildlife, including bears, wolves, foxes, golden eagles, hawks, and otters.

One of the most attractive pearls of Dilijan is Lake Parz (meaning “Clear Lake”). It is located in the northern part of the town, at an altitude of 1,400 meters. It’s a perfect place to relax and recharge your mind.

Dilijan is also rich in rivers. The longest and deepest one is the Aghstev River, which stretches for 133 km.
It accompanies you through almost every sightseeing spot in the region, including the two famous medieval monasteries — Goshavank and Haghartsin.

The town is also home to UWC Dilijan College, the first international boarding school in Armenia, which brings together students from all over the world and adds a modern, educational pulse to this quiet mountain town.
